The fine print · II
In force from 3 October 2026
We keep what Mezzotale needs to work, and nothing to sell. There are no adverts, no advertising trackers, and we don’t sell or rent your information to anyone.
Each section starts with a short summary; the full text under it is what counts.
§ 1Who looks after your data
In shortOne person runs Mezzotale and is responsible for your data. Write to us about anything here.
Mezzotale is run by Nana Kojo Atta-Benyah, an individual in Ghana, and is the “controller” of your personal data: the one who decides how it’s used and answers for it. Contact us at contact@mezzotale.com, or by post at the address on the contact page.
§ 2What we keep
In shortYour account details, your profile, what you read and write, and records of what you buy.
- Account: your email address and sign-in details (held by Clerk), and your name and picture if you sign in with Google.
- Profile: the name, handle, picture and bio you choose.
- Reading: your place in each story (including the story’s own saved state, such as choices made), which stories you’ve opened and finished, how many new scenes you’ve read today, and what you’ve saved and liked.
- Community: your comments, and who you follow.
- Writing: the stories, pictures, music and details you put in Mezzotale Studio and sync or publish. Stories you keep only on your computer stay there; we don’t see them.
- Purchases: what you bought, when, for how much, and whether a payment was refunded or disputed. Whop holds your card details; we never see them.
- Technical: IP addresses and basic request records, used to keep Mezzotale running and to stop abuse.
- Messages: what you write to us.
We don’t use analytics or crash-reporting services yet. When we add them (we plan to use PostHog and Sentry), we’ll update this policy first, and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
§ 3Why we keep it
In shortTo run your account and what you’ve asked for, keep Mezzotale safe and fair, and meet our legal duties.
- To provide Mezzotale (our contract with you): your account, reading places, the daily limit, your library, publishing, comments, follows, Gleams and subscriptions.
- Our legitimate interests: keeping Mezzotale secure, stopping cheating, spam and abuse, moderating content, and understanding problems so we can fix them.
- Legal duties: keeping payment records for accounting and tax, and responding to lawful requests, such as reporting child abuse material.
- Your consent, where we ask for it; you can withdraw it at any time.
We don’t use your data for advertising, and we don’t make decisions about you that have legal effects by automated means alone.
§ 4Services that hold it for us
In shortA handful of trusted services store and process data for us, under contracts that protect it.
These services hold personal data on our behalf, only to do the job described:
| Service | What it does | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Clerk | Signing in: your email address, password (stored scrambled), sign-in with Google, and sessions | United States |
| Neon | Our database: profiles, stories, reading places, library, likes, comments, follows and purchase records | Germany |
| Cloudflare | Runs the website and stores uploaded pictures and music; it sees IP addresses as it serves pages | Worldwide network |
| Upstash | Counts the scenes read each day for the daily limit; each count is deleted about an hour after its day ends | Germany |
| Whop | Takes payments: your card or PayPal details, billing address and payment history | United States |
| Only if you choose “Continue with Google”: passes us your name, email address and picture | United States |
Some of these are outside your country. Where the law requires, the transfer is protected by safeguards such as the European Commission’s standard contractual clauses, which these providers use.
When Studio Pro’s AI features arrive, text and descriptions you send to them will go to Anthropic (for writing help) and Google (for pictures and music) to produce a result; we’ll add them here before that happens. We only share data otherwise if the law requires it, to protect people from harm, or if Mezzotale is ever passed to a new owner, who would be bound by this policy.
§ 6What other people can see
In shortYour profile, published stories and comments are public. Your reading and library are private.
Public: your profile (name, handle, picture, bio), the stories you publish, your comments, and how many accounts follow you and you follow. Stories show how many likes and reads they have, not who liked or read them.
Private: what you’re reading and where you are in it, your saved and liked stories, the list of accounts you follow, your Gleams, and your purchases.
§ 7How long we keep it
In shortAs long as your account is open, then deleted, except payment records the law makes us keep.
- Account, profile, reading and library data: while your account is open, and deleted within 30 days of it being closed.
- Published stories: until you take them down or close your account.
- Daily scene counts: about a day.
- Deleted comments: the words are erased at once; a placeholder stays only while replies still hang from it.
- Payment records: as long as accounting and tax law requires (up to seven years), with your account details removed after you leave.
- Backups: overwritten within 30 days.
§ 8Your rights
In shortYou can see, correct, download or delete your data, and object to how we use it. Just ask.
Depending on where you live (including under Ghana’s Data Protection Act, the UK GDPR and the EU GDPR), you have the right to:
- see the data we hold about you, and get a copy in a format you can take elsewhere;
- have it corrected, or deleted;
- object to, or ask us to limit, how we use it;
- withdraw consent you’ve given;
- complain to a data protection authority, such as Ghana’s Data Protection Commission, the UK’s ICO, or the authority where you live.
You can change your profile yourself in your settings. For everything else, write to contact@mezzotale.com; we answer within 30 days. Tools to download your data and delete your account yourself are coming to your account page.
§ 9Children
In shortMezzotale is for people 13 and older.
You must be 13 or older to have an account. If we learn that someone younger has an account, we delete it. If you think a child under 13 has given us their data, write to contact@mezzotale.com.
§ 10Keeping it safe
In shortWe protect your data carefully, and would tell you if something went wrong.
Connections to Mezzotale are encrypted, passwords are handled by Clerk and never seen by us, the Studio signs in with its own revocable key, and access to our systems is limited and protected. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach put your data at risk, we would tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
§ 11Changes to this policy
In shortIf this policy changes in a way that matters, we tell you first.
We update this policy when Mezzotale changes how it uses data, before the change happens. For changes that matter, we tell you by email or on the site. The date at the top shows the version in force.
